Race report by Alex Hagberg
The largest racing series in Europe for electric touring cars, the ETS, once again took off with its first round, held in the small village of Muhlheim-Kärlich, just outside of Koblenz, in the south of Germany. The event had attracted an impressive count of 320 entries, divided in three different classes; modified, pro stock and formula. The XRAY team was in attendance with full force, with all their European top drivers, both new and old.

This event was special by the reason that it was the first time that we officially ran the brand new T4 chassis. And as for all important events for carpet, I had prepared my cars very carefully with a lot of carpet testing back home. But as always, the track conditions are much to different to what anyone can be used to from their respective home tracks, so set-up fine tuning can be a difficult task once the race starts. The track layout this year was fairly technical with two tricky chicanes where one was taken at very low speed, and the other one at almost full throttle.

During the controlled practice on Friday, I struggled a bit to find a good feeling for the car. The combination of this carpet and Ride tires seems to make the cars drive a lot over the front end, making the cars very twitchy and sensitive. Some other team drivers were posting more convincing laptimes such as the young and talented Tim Wahl from Germany, and Adrian Berntsen from Norway who just re-joined the team in time for this event.

In qualifying I found myself a bit off the pace, so I had to drive as fast as possible without making too many mistakes, in order to at least secure a spot in the A-final. As all the ETS races, this was also an super competitive event where only a few seconds separated the top 10 or top 20 placed drivers in each round of qualifying. In the end I had scored 2 x 5th places overall which put me on the 8th spot for the A-main. Tim Wahl had driven two perfect runs which put him 7th on the grid, which was also his first big, international A-main finish. Adrian Berntsen had showed a super fast pace throughout qualifying and found himself 4th on the grid, clearly aiming for a podium position for the Sunday's finals. Magnus Vässmar claimed the 10th and last spot for the A-final, which meant that we had 4x XRAY T4 cars in the final. This was a great result, and even though we did not really challenge for the overall TQ position, we felt that we had done well with the new car at its first big international outing.

The finals were going to be a close affair like always. Adrian came close to the podium after some close racing, but eventually, his 3rd and 4th positions in the finals would only be enough for 5th place overall. I did my best to improve from my 8th starting position, which eventually meant that I finished 6th overall. Tim and Magnus also drove well to claim their 9th and 10th respective positions overall. In the end we had a strong outing but still have some testing to do with our new platform, and we feel confident that this can develop into something better for the upcoming indoor races!
